Am I Good Enough to Teach Guitar Privately?
I have a diploma in music; more accurately a music performance diploma on guitar. I can pretty much do anything and understand most, if not all of the diploma level theory and how it applies to guitar. I can play simple variations of most types of music and understand the basic concepts that make different types of music ‘different’ and unique. For instance, scatting with reggae, playing on the off beat etc. The only ‘technique’ I can’t do (because I’ve never tried or practiced, it doesn’t appeal to me at the moment) is sweep picking as I tend to play and practice music that appeals to me at the time, and it never came into my scope of practice, although I feel it wouldn’t take long for me to pick up.
I am starting a foundation degree course in the same subject next week. I am only twenty one.
My question is, do I sound good enough to teach guitar privately?
I am very organised, and would write up lesson plans etc, or maybe even follow a guided tutorial from a book with my student.
From a educational standpoint, you are more than qualified.
If you taught beginners (which would be most of your clientele at least until you became established, if you do become established), you would have a loooonnngg time until you needed to get to sweep picking.
On a more important level, do you have the ability to teach? Can you impart this information you have in a effective way to a student?
You should figure that out before you start.
There you go then. Think of some of the effective methods people taught you with and use them.
Just as there are techniques to playing that improve as you practice, there are techniques in teaching too.
