What Are Some Suggestions to Improve Guitar Rhythm?
I’m a guitar player at beginner level and I’ve been playing for like a year or so but I while I have improved alot in terms of finger movement and that kind of thing my strumming rhythm and style is horrendous. I probably don’t practice quite enough but even when I go through a phase where I practice a ton my rhythm stays the same. Any advice like any exercises I could do to improve or maybe some youtube guy who puts it in a way that makes it easy to understand and do?
Pick a few chords that sound nice together, turn on your metronome [or use the online metronome if you don't have one] and practice strumming them once or twice in time to the metronome. Literally just do that; strum one chord twice then switch and do the next chord, then switch back and do it again. When you’re feeling more confident add in a few more chords and up the speed of the metronome.
Trust me, it works. I used to suck at the rhythm side of guitar but I’m a whole LOT better now
Find songs with rhythmic styles you want to learn and then learn them. It’s pretty much that simple.
I wanted to learn how to do galloping riffs so I just found songs that had what I was looking for and then downloaded the Power Tabs for them (its a tabbing program for guitar which is free) and just kept practicing until I got it down. I specifically wanted to learn the really fast gallop from Raining Blood at the beginning now I write all kinds of galloping riffs.
Same thing with fast alternate picking. I downloaded stuff like Metallica’s Fight Fire With Fire and just practiced until I could keep up with the tab.
I agree and also make sure that you can switch chords well before cranking up the metronome. I would start very slow and count strums as 16 notes ( 1 E & UH). Make sure that 1 and & are down strokes and E and UH are up strokes. go really slow at first and make sure you are hitting the right beat. Make sure your foot is tapping to the right beat. dont count 16th notes in your brain but with your foot count them as 8th notes
